Taiyuan, whose ancient name was Jìnyáng and one-character abbreviation is Bīng, is the  capital of Shanxi Province with an area of 6,988 square kilometers and a current resident population of 5.3 million.  Surrounded by mountains on its three sides with the Fenhe River flowing through the central city, Taiyuan experiences no bitter cold in winter and no intense heat in summer, which earns it the reputation of "Splendid City of Taiyuan" since ancient times. As a famous national historical city and the political, economic, cultural and international exchange center of Shanxi Province, Taiyuan is also recognized as a significant military and cultural city in northern China, the world-renowned capital of Jin Merchants, and one of the most important energy and heavy industry bases in China.
