Travel frenzy in Luoyang sees tourists overwhelm Yingtianmen site museum

Tourists pack the Yingtianmen Site Museum at the National Archaeological Site Park of Sui-Tang Luoyang City in central China's Henan Province, October 14, 2023. /CGTN

First built in 605 during the Sui Dynasty, the Yingtian Gate boasts an iconic "concave" shape and was once the southern gate of the Ziwei Palace in Luoyang City during the Sui and Tang dynasties (581-907).

The design and the techniques used in the construction of this vast ancient city gate complex, whose architectural forms honored the emperors, are regarded as having a far-reaching influence on following Chinese dynasties, including during the building of the Wumen Gate in the Forbidden City, the imperial palace of the Ming (1368–1644) and Qing (1644–1911) dynasties in Beijing.

The Yingtian Gate was rebuilt ahead of the opening of the Yingtianmen Site Museum in 2019, which features relics from the Yingtian Gate unearthed at the site as recently as 1990, making it a must-visit destination for visitors interested in the Tang Dynasty.
