Recently, the Dujiangyan water source “Wellspring of Life” photography tour—organized by the Dujiangyan Water Conservancy Development Center Sichuan Province—journeyed into Songpan, Mao County, and Wenchuan in the Aba Tibetan and Qiang Autonomous Prefecture. Through the photographers’ artful lenses, the expedition revealed Minjiang River’s breathtaking vistas, its flourishing ecosystem, and the tangible results of local water-source conservation efforts.

The Dujiangyan Irrigation Project—built 2,280 years ago by Prefecture Li Bing and his son in Shu County—has been running ever since, transforming the once-flood-prone Chengdu Plain into a boundless “Land of Abundance.” It remains the oldest and only grand-scale dam-free irrigation system in the world, as well as a trailblazer of global water conservancy culture.

As Dujiangyan’s headwater, the source of Minjiang River begins in Songpan County, where the towering mountains of the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau yield to the western plains of Sichuan. Here, sheer cliffs and rugged terrain shape a landscape from which Minjiang River roars forth, snaking down the high gorges like a colossal dragon breaking free.

Farther downstream in Mao County, the Minjiang River carves out deep ravines and crystalline barrier lakes, creating spectacular canyon vistas. A wealth of flora and fauna thrives among these soaring peaks, forming a critical stronghold for ecological conservation across the watershed.

Wenchuan, meanwhile, lies at the heart of the Minjiang basin, safeguarding Dujiangyan Irrigation Project’s precious water supply. Here, the photography team saw firsthand how Dujiangyan Irrigation Project sustains farming and preserves delicate ecosystems, as well as how the region has healed since the devastating Wenchuan earthquake—demonstrating the pivotal role Dujiangyan plays in disaster prevention and resilience.
