Guizhou Liupanshui Hosts Hydrogen Energy Demonstration and Phase II Ignition Ceremony of Meijin Huayu Coal-Coke-Hydrogen Project

On May 10, the Liuzhi Special Zone in Liupanshui City, Guizhou Province, hosted the Hydrogen Energy Demonstration Event and the Phase II Ignition and Furnace Baking Ceremony for the Meijin Huayu Coal-Coke-Hydrogen Project. The event marked the trial operation of China’s first commercial hydrogen-powered locomotive, marking a breakthrough in hydrogen-powered rail freight transport in Southwest China. At the same time, 100 49-ton-class hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks and four 8.6-meter hydrogen fuel cell buses officially commenced operation.

The Meijin Huayu Coal-Coke-Hydrogen Comprehensive Utilization Demonstration Project utilizes internationally advanced 7.65-meter top-charging coke oven technology, enabling the co-production of 3.8 million tons of metallurgical coke and 40 million standard cubic meters of high-purity hydrogen annually.

Once hailed as the "Coal Capital of Southern China," Liupanshui has in recent years been accelerating its transition from traditional "coal-coke-chemical" industries toward green hydrogen energy, forging a distinctive path of regional green transformation. Currently, the city has deployed two hydrogen fuel cell locomotives, four hydrogen buses, and 100 hydrogen-powered heavy-duty trucks for demonstration operations. These deployments further expand hydrogen application scenarios across freight and public transit, creating a scalable demonstration effect.

Looking ahead, Liupanshui plans to build smart operation platforms, commercial maintenance centers, and hydrogen vehicle assembly and manufacturing industries, boosting the rapid development of Guizhou's hydrogen energy sector.
