Eliminating Transmission Line Hazards at the Source

On April 13, the Transmission Operation and Maintenance Center of State Grid Guyuan Company spent three days organizing personnel to address potential safety hazards to transmission lines caused by the packaging of drip irrigation tapes, eliminating the risk of hazards at the source and achieving a "forward shift of the checkpoint" in the governance of transmission line safety.

Affected by the strong cold air moving eastward and southward, abnormal weather such as strong winds, cold waves, and sandstorms has successively occurred in the Guyuan area.

During the inspection of the transmission lines, staff from the Transmission Operation and Maintenance Center found that the packaging of the drip irrigation tapes used in a potato planting shed was made of slender plastic strips. These plastic strips are light in texture and highly tough, making them extremely likely to entangle on the conductors, triggering line tripping. Moreover, if casually incinerated, they may even lead to a fire under the lines.

To prevent potential hazards, the center immediately contacted the group to which the potato planting industry belongs. After learning that the group still had hundreds of rolls of drip irrigation tapes in stock to be distributed to farmers, it took the initiative to propose replacing the plastic packaging with environmentally friendly adhesive tapes.

The staff went to the warehouse where the drip irrigation tapes were stored, removed the packaging from the undelivered tapes, and then fixed them by winding adhesive tapes. The removed plastic packaging was then disposed of in a unified manner. The entire process of replacing the packaging followed the steps: "removal – replacement – destruction".

“In the past, we had to deal with many safety issues caused by plastic strips entangling the lines. Now, by solving the problem directly at the source, the probability of hidden dangers occurring has been greatly reduced,” said Gao Meng, a staff member.

This operation not only reduced operation and maintenance costs, but also achieved a collaborative governance model of “power safety + environmental protection,” opening up a new path for risk prevention and control of power facilities.

As of April 13, the center had successfully replaced the plastic packaging of drip irrigation tapes in multiple warehouses. By targeting the product distribution process, it has shifted from traditional “post-fault repair” to “source blocking,” truly nipping the hidden dangers in the bud.(Text by Jiaxin Feng)
