In May, layers of mist rise from the surface of the Xiaodongjiang River in Zixing City, Chenzhou, Hunan Province, creating a stunning, fairy-tale-like scene.

This dreamy “fog-covered Xiaodongjiang River” scenery is caused by the temperature difference effect. The river’s water flows from the bottom of the 150-meter-deep Dongjiang Dam, maintaining a year-round temperature of around 8 to 10 degrees Celsius. From April to October, the contrast between the cool water and the warmer surrounding air produces this enchanting view.

The 12-kilometer-long Xiaodongjiang River features a specially built fog-viewing walkway to help visitors better appreciate the scenery. Tourists can stroll along the path and experience the poetic charm of “wandering through a painting.”
