The bridge’s main arch draws inspiration from the curved form of the Tanka people’s traditional boat dwellings, with its arch ribs harmoniously echoing the contours of the surrounding landscape. Mangrove forests inspired its truss design, while the bridge’s striking red appearance and integrated LED lighting have made it a landmark sight in the Greater Bay Area.
During construction, the project team developed several key innovative technologies for a three-main-truss steel arch bridge, saving approximately 70 million yuan ($9.89 million) in costs and shortening the project schedule by 40 percent. Advanced achievements—such as the 10,000-metric-ton triple-friction pendulum anti-fall bearing and an intelligent bridge inspection system—have since been widely adopted in other engineering projects. The bridge has also received more than 10 major awards, including the National Survey and Design First Prize and the China Steel Structure Gold Award, as well as over 60 domestic and international patents.
As an important transportation link in the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, the Pearl Bay Bridge not only showcases outstanding architectural aesthetics, but also drives regional development through technological innovation, becoming a defining symbol of Nansha’s modern coastal cityscape.
