The expansion project for Transformer No. 3 at the 220kV Shenzhuan Substation in Dongjing Town, Songjiang District, officially went into operation on June 14. The project added 240,000 kilowatts of power supply capacity, effectively alleviating the long-standing operational strain caused by heavy loads at the substation and laying a solid foundation for ensuring a stable power supply during this year’s summer peak demand period.
In recent years, driven by the westward extensions of Metro Line 9 and 12, Dongjing Town has seen a concentration of “specialized, refined, distinctive, and innovative” enterprises and the completion of large-scale high-quality residential projects, resulting in a continuous rise in the region’s electricity demand. As a core power supply hub, the original Main Transformers No. 1 and No. 2 at the Shenzhuan Substation have been operating at high capacity for an extended period. During the 2025 summer peak electricity demand period, the load factors of the two main transformers reached 81% and 92%, respectively, increasing the risk of equipment overheating. Should a single transformer fail and shut down, it would directly threaten the safety of the regional power grid and trigger widespread power outages.
To break the deadlock, Songjiang Electric Power Supply Company, with the support of the State Grid Shanghai Electric Power Company, coordinated with multiple parties to advance the expansion of Main Transformer No. 3. To ensure the project would be operational before the 2026 summer peak demand period, Songjiang Electric Power Supply Company carried out scientific planning and meticulously developed specialized construction plans and contingency plans. While ensuring uninterrupted power supply to customers, Songjiang company smoothly completed the load transfer. Throughout the project, it strictly enforced safety protocols, addressed on-site challenges in real time, and ensured that every stage proceeded in a standardized and orderly manner.

According to calculations, once Main Transformer No. 3 is put into operation, the load factors of the original Main Transformers No. 1 and No. 2 are expected to drop to 73% and 74%, respectively, significantly alleviating the heavy-load pressure. The new transformer not only optimizes the area’s power supply capacity and load transfer capabilities but also frees up more feeder slots, reserving ample power capacity for Dongjing’s future development.
To date, Songjiang Electric Power Supply Company has fully completed the reconnection project for the associated feeder lines, further increasing its power supply capacity. The company will continue to optimize grid operation modes and refine emergency response plans to ensure the safe and stable operation of the Songjiang power grid during the 2026 summer peak demand period, thereby providing robust power support for the high-quality economic and social development of the region and improvements in people’s livelihoods.
