Tracing back 120 years, Hanzhen Jiji Water and Electricity Company was established in Hankou in 1906, marking the beginning of Wuhan's public electric power sector’s journey to serve the nation through industrial development.
Today, the Wuhan power grid has 9,267 km of transmission lines, with a transformer capacity of 78.383 million kVA, a peak power load exceeding 18.26 million kW, and annual total electricity consumption exceeding 85.6 billion kWh. Growing from an initial load of just 1,300 kW to over 18 million kW, it has developed into the largest power supply hub and load center of the Central China Power Grid.
To foster the development of new quality productive forces, Wuhan's electric power sector is accelerating its green and smart transformation and continuously cultivating new drivers of growth. It pioneered the nation's first electricity-carbon-finance integrated service and launched green credit products, leveraging market mechanisms to guide enterprises toward off-peak production, thereby helping reduce costs and carbon emissions. The commissioning of the 220 kV Optics Valley dedicated substation has strengthened energy security for the integrated storage and computing industrial base. The region is accelerating the deployment of zero-carbon industrial parks and virtual power plants, with plans to expand adjustable resources available through virtual power plants to 1 million kW by 2026.
A representative of State Grid Wuhan Power Supply Company stated that the company will inherit the cultural legacy of serving the nation through industrial development, continue advancing technological, managerial, and institutional innovation, and pursue the goal of building a world-class urban power grid. By providing a safe, reliable, green, and low-carbon power supply, the company will support Hubei in building a pioneer area for China's efforts to foster a new development pattern, injecting sustained momentum into the high-quality development of the megacity.
