Botou, Hebei: A Century of Crispy Aroma, Craftsmanship Preserved; Intangible Heritage Delicacy Reborn

By the Grand Canal in Botou City, Hebei Province, a century-old flavor of everyday life has been passed down from generation to generation. This is the provincial-level intangible cultural heritage: Botou Yang Family Shaobing (a traditional baked sesame cake). After five generations of inheritance and a century of development, Yang Family Shaobing has become one of Botou's most representative specialty foods and cultural tourism calling cards, known for its unique crisp, fragrant, and rich taste.

It is said that Yang Family Shaobing originated during the prosperous period of canal grain transport in the late Qing Dynasty. At that time, merchants gathered at the Botou wharf, and Yang Family Shaobing was widely favored by traveling merchants for its texture—crisp yet not falling apart, fragrant yet not greasy. For more than a hundred years, Yang Family Shaobing has strictly controlled the processes of ingredient selection, dough mixing, layering, and baking, preserving its authentic traditional flavor. While adhering to traditional craftsmanship, the family's inheritors have kept pace with the times, improving baking equipment and enriching product varieties. They have introduced more than 20 flavors, including sesame-paste sugar, spiral-shaped, and flaky varieties, to meet diverse tastes.

In 2019, the craft of making Yang Family Shaobing was included in the representative list of provincial-level intangible cultural heritage projects of Hebei Province. Today, the fifth-generation inheritors continue to uphold the tradition, dedicating themselves to the inheritance and innovative revitalization of the intangible heritage craft. They have improved product packaging and created distinctive cultural tourism souvenirs, allowing the century-old flavor to move beyond street markets and reach a wider audience.
