Modern Seed Industry Helps Jinan Develop

In the golden autumn season, at the National Crop Variety Exhibition and Demonstration Center in Shanghe County, Jinan City, the slogan “Giving Agriculture Technological Wings” is particularly prominent. If seeds are considered the “chips” of agriculture, then germplasm resources are the “hardcore chips” of excellent varieties. In recent years, Jinan City has implemented the census and collection of crop germplasm resources, conducting a comprehensive survey and systematic investigation of crop germplasm resources. A large number of outstanding germplasm resources, such as Zhangqiu Baojia Celery, Salviamiltiorrhiza Bunge, Tang Dynasty Ancient Chestnut, and Mingshui Dahongmang Fragrant Rice, have been fully excavated and protected, further understanding the development of crop germplasm resources in the whole city.

Taking the example of Mingshui Dahongmang Fragrant Rice, a germplasm protection and breeding nursery will be established to purify and rejuvenate Mingshui Dahongmang Fragrant Rice, gradually restoring its excellent characteristics. It will integrate green and ecological high-quality fragrant rice planting technology and demonstration promotion, establish a standardized planting base for Mingshui Dahongmang Fragrant Rice, polish its reputation, create a new brand image, and recreate the beautiful vision of “a bountiful year in the fragrance of rice flowers”.

“Jimai 22” has been the largest wheat variety in terms of planting area in China for 10 consecutive years; the production capacity and supply of grafted seedlings rank first in China, and the “Weili Planting Model” has been promoted to provinces such as Gansu and Hainan.

In recent years, Jinan has adhered to the integration of crop varieties (seedlings) in breeding and propagation, continuously optimizing the variety layout in all aspects. Adhering to the purpose of “speaking for enterprises and taking responsibility for farmers”, it has built a seed industry platform for “selecting seeds, varieties, and development direction”. It utilizes exhibition platforms to promote the development of the modern seed industry and forge strong seed industry chips for the high-quality development of modern agriculture.

Currently, Jinan has built the Shanghe and Changqing National Crop Variety Exhibition and Demonstration Centers with high standards, is innovatively implementing development models, and is envisioning a bright future as the “Seed Capital of Northern China”.
