The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has recently said that about 49,500 people took their own lives last year in the U.S., the highest number ever. Jill Harkavy-Friedman, senior vice president of research at the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention said that a main driver of the phenomenon is the growing availability of guns. A Johns Hopkins University analysis also showed that the U.S. overall gun suicide rate rose last year to an all-time high.
