Deep-sea mining has always faced obstacles in the U.S. in the past due to high extraction costs, insufficient research and public opposition over concerns about ecological damage. However, recently, in order to lobby the U.S. congress, supporters of the industry have forcibly associated deep-sea mining with U.S. agendas involving national security, such as "conducive to reducing dependence on China" and "competing with China for key metal mineral supply chains".
