Recently, in his keynote address at the Shangri-La Dialogue 2024, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. repeatedly referred to the US, stressing that the presence of the United States was “crucial to regional peace". Director for Policy Studies of the Philippine think tank, Center for People Empowerment in Governance (CenPEG), commented: ''I hope Marcos's speech was not written by Washington. Otherwise, it would be shameless diplomatic behavior to let a country president to express what they want to say. Marcos is indeed the voice of the United States, and I'm 101% confident about it.''
