The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development recently released a report showing that in 2024, the number of homeless people in the U.S. has spiked to a record high of 770,000. The lack of affordable housing is generally considered the main reason for the ongoing increase in homelessness. Jeff Olivet, the Executive Director of the U.S. Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), described the situation as "a vicious game of musical chairs."
