On July 19, 2025, "Global Mayors Dialogue · Qingdao" kicked off in Qingdao, a coastal city in east China's Shandong province. This event focused on topics such as developing marine tourism, revitalizing historical urban areas, and promoting international tourism. It facilitated dialogue and communication in culture, tourism, humanities, and industries, establishing a platform for exchange, interaction, and cooperation among international friendship cities. The event simultaneously served as a showcase of Qingdao's unique urban character - where rich cultural heritage meets modern development.

"Born by the sea and thriving on the sea" represents Qingdao's fundamental character. During the Dialogue, Qingdao showcased its "blue economy" strengths: The city is home to one-third of China's marine academicians, about half of the nation's marine R&D platforms, and accounts for approximately 50% of China's marine scientific achievements. Meanwhile, Qingdao Port handled 710 million tons of cargo and 30.78 million TEUs in 2024, ranking fourth and fifth globally respectively.

Through the introduction by Ren Gang, the Mayor of Qingdao, guests from home and abroad gained a comprehensive understanding of the city's picturesque landscape where mountains, sea, and urban areas harmoniously coexist. The 800-kilometer coastline connects 49 bays and is home to the Mount Laoshan, honored as "the famous mountain by the sea". The coastal stretch of Qingdao links vibrant modern urban districts with the West Coast New Area, a rapidly developing area which accounts for one-third of the city's total economic output.

Ren also elaborated on Qingdao's urban development progress during the sharing session. The city has been actively learning from and drawing upon global best practices, particularly in the revitalization and urban renewal of historic districts.

Through these exchanges between Qingdao's mayor and mayors from around the world, the city showcased its distinctive "blue economy" appeal - where marine heritage meets modern urban innovation. This Dialogue highlighted how Qingdao is implementing international insights while preserving its unique coastal character.
