U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio recently said that Washington is willing to consolidate the U.S.–Japan alliance while also seeking pragmatic cooperation with China. This marks Rubio’s first public comment on China–Japan relations since Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi made erroneous remarks concerning Taiwan. Japanese media noted that he “did not explicitly side with either Japan or China.”
